How Long Does a Family Photo Session Take? (Will my kids make it through and more importantly will I?)

June 11, 2026

“Will my kids actually last that long?”

It’s one of the first questions parents ask when they’re planning a family photo session Sydney.

If you’re picturing your toddler running in every direction after ten minutes or your baby needing an unexpected cuddle break, you’re certainly not alone. Every family wonders how long a session will take and whether their children will stay happy from beginning to end.

The good news is that family photography isn’t about asking children to sit still for an hour. Instead, it’s about creating an experience that feels relaxed, enjoyable and natural. When everyone feels comfortable, beautiful moments happen effortlessly.

Most family photo sessions last between 45 and 60 minutes in the studio and 60 to 90 minutes outdoors. However, every family is different, and I always adapt the session to suit your children rather than expecting them to fit a schedule.

How long does a family photo session take?

A typical family photo session Sydney lasts between 45 and 60 minutes in the studio or 60 to 90 minutes outdoors.

Studio sessions are usually a little shorter because there are fewer distractions, allowing children to stay engaged for longer. Outdoor sessions, on the other hand, naturally unfold at a slower pace because kids love to explore their surroundings. As a result, we allow extra time for those spontaneous moments that often become family favourites.

Why Studio Sessions Usually Take Less Time

One of the biggest advantages of photographing families in the studio is simplicity.

Unlike a busy park or beach, the studio removes many of the distractions that naturally capture a child’s attention. There are no dogs walking past, no playgrounds to explore and no waves calling their name. Instead, children focus on the people they love most.

Because of this, we can move through different family combinations more efficiently. First, we’ll photograph everyone together. Next, we’ll capture mum with the children before dad jumps in for his own special moments. Afterwards, we’ll create sibling portraits and finish with individual photographs.

Although studio sessions are shorter, they never feel rushed. In fact, many parents tell me they’re surprised by how much we achieve in under an hour.

Better still, children often stay engaged from beginning to end because the environment is calm, familiar and designed specifically for photography.

Outdoor Sessions Move at a Different Pace

Outdoor sessions tell a different story, and that’s part of their charm.

Rather than moving quickly from one photograph to the next, we slow everything down and let children be themselves. They might collect shells along the beach, run through the grass or simply stop to cuddle mum when they need a little reassurance.

As a result, outdoor sessions generally last between 60 and 90 minutes.

That extra time isn’t spent posing. Instead, it gives children the freedom to settle in, explore and enjoy the experience without feeling hurried.

The best family photographs rarely happen when children are told exactly what to do. Instead, they happen during the little moments in between.

Every Child Is Different

One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that every child behaves the same way.

In reality, every child arrives with their own personality.

Some little ones are full of confidence from the very beginning. Meanwhile, others need a few quiet minutes before they feel comfortable. Both approaches are completely normal.

Rather than forcing interactions, I simply follow your child’s lead. Once they realise there is no pressure to smile or perform, they naturally begin to relax.

Because of this approach, parents often tell me afterwards that the session felt far easier than they expected.

What Happens During the Session?

Many parents imagine standing in one spot while someone tells everyone exactly where to look.

That’s never my approach.

Instead, the session flows naturally.

We usually begin with everyone together. Afterwards, we’ll photograph each parent with the children before creating beautiful sibling portraits. Then we’ll capture individual photographs and finish with the candid moments that happen when everyone forgets about the camera.

Those relaxed interactions often become the images families love the most.

What If We Need a Break?

The simple answer is… we take one.

Children get hungry.

Babies need feeding.

Toddlers sometimes need a cuddle.

Occasionally, everyone benefits from a few quiet minutes.

That’s completely expected.

In fact, those little pauses often lead to some of the most genuine photographs because everyone has a chance to reset.

There’s never any pressure to rush.

From Behind the Camera

After photographing hundreds of Sydney families, I’ve noticed something interesting.

Parents almost always worry about the length of the session.

Children almost never do.

Kids don’t arrive wondering whether they’ll last an hour. They arrive curious, playful and ready to spend time with the people they love.

Once parents stop worrying about the clock, the whole experience changes. Everyone relaxes, children become themselves and those genuine moments naturally unfold.

That’s why I never measure the success of a session by the number of minutes.

I measure it by the smiles, cuddles, laughter and little moments you’ll treasure for years to come.

A Few Simple Ways to Help Everything Run Smoothly

Although every session is different, a little preparation always helps.

Before your session, try to keep the day as relaxed as possible. Likewise, choose outfits that everyone feels comfortable wearing rather than something unfamiliar.

If you have young children, bring along a drink and a couple of simple snacks. In addition, allow enough time to arrive without feeling rushed.

Most importantly, let your children know they’re coming to have fun.

When parents stay relaxed, children almost always do the same.

It’s Never About the Clock

At the end of the day, a family photography session isn’t about fitting as many photographs as possible into sixty minutes.

Instead, it’s about slowing down long enough to capture this season of your family’s life.

Years from now, you won’t remember whether your session lasted 48 minutes or 82 minutes.

You’ll remember the way your daughter wrapped her arms around your neck.

You’ll remember your son laughing at dad’s silly jokes.

Most of all, you’ll remember how it felt to be together.

That’s what makes a family photo session Sydney truly worthwhile.
