Let me guess…
You finally organise family photos, spend hours choosing outfits, get everyone ready on time, and then suddenly your toddler decides today is the perfect day to become completely feral.
Honestly? Welcome to parenthood.
One of the biggest worries parents have before booking a session is whether their children will “behave.” However, the truth is that the best family photos rarely come from perfectly behaved kids anyway. In fact, some of the most meaningful moments happen in the chaos.
That’s exactly why I focus on relaxed family photography Sydney sessions that allow kids to simply be kids.
Perfectly Behaved Kids Are Actually Boring
Okay, maybe not boring… but definitely less memorable.
Some parents imagine family photos should involve everyone standing perfectly still, smiling directly at the camera like it’s school photo day in 1997. Meanwhile, most kids would rather run into the ocean fully clothed or ask for snacks every 14 seconds.
And honestly, that’s completely normal.
During relaxed family photography Sydney sessions, I encourage movement, play, cuddles, tickles, and genuine interaction. As a result, your photos feel real instead of forced. Your children don’t need to perform for me. They just need to feel safe enough to be themselves.
The “Chaotic” Moments Are Usually the Best Ones
Believe it or not, the moments parents apologise for are often the moments they end up loving most.
The wild laughs. The toddler running away barefoot. The baby clinging to mum. The in-between cuddles after a mini meltdown. These are the moments that actually tell the story of your family right now.
Of course, we still capture beautiful portraits along the way. However, I never expect children to sit still for an entire session. That expectation usually creates stress for everyone, especially parents.
Instead, relaxed family photography Sydney is about connection over perfection.
A Few Tricks That Actually Help
That said, there are definitely ways to help sessions run more smoothly.
Firstly, avoid telling kids they “have to behave.” Usually, that creates pressure before the session even starts. Instead, tell them you’re going on a fun family adventure.
Secondly, snacks are always a good idea. Tiny bribery snacks? Even better.
Finally, trust the process.
I’ve photographed children who cried, refused shoes, rolled in sand, demanded dinosaur breaks, and once even tried to fight a wave. Somehow, parents still ended up with beautiful galleries full of genuine connection and joy.
Because years from now, your children will not remember whether they smiled perfectly for every photo.
They’ll remember the way it felt being together.
