“Where should we have our family photos?”

It’s one of the first questions families ask me when they’re planning an outdoor session. While it’s easy to focus on finding the prettiest beach or park, the truth is that the best location isn’t always the most popular one.

A great outdoor family photography Sydney session isn’t just about beautiful scenery. It’s about choosing a place where your family feels relaxed, your children can be themselves and the light helps tell your story.

The right location can make everyone feel comfortable from the moment you arrive. Even better, it helps create photographs that feel timeless rather than trendy.

So, before you settle on a location, here are a few things worth considering.

What Makes a Great Outdoor Family Photography Location?

The perfect location isn’t necessarily the one with the biggest views.

Instead, it’s the one that suits your family.

A quiet beach at sunset might be perfect for one family, while another may prefer a peaceful park where the kids have room to run around.

Although every family is different, the best locations usually have a few things in common.

They offer beautiful natural light.

They aren’t overly crowded.

They give children space to explore safely.

Most importantly, they allow everyone to relax.

When families feel comfortable, genuine moments happen naturally.

Think About Your Children’s Age

One of the biggest factors when choosing a location is your children’s age.

Toddlers usually love exploring. As a result, wide open parks often work beautifully because little ones have room to move without feeling restricted.

Babies, on the other hand, are happiest somewhere calm and easy to access. If you’re carrying a pram, blankets and baby bags, a location with nearby parking makes life much easier.

Older children often enjoy beaches because they can collect shells, walk along the shoreline and simply enjoy being outdoors.

Rather than choosing a location because it looks impressive online, choose somewhere that matches your family’s stage of life.

Light Is More Important Than the Location

Parents often spend weeks deciding on a location.

Meanwhile, photographers spend most of their time thinking about light.

Beautiful light can transform an ordinary location into something extraordinary. On the other hand, harsh midday sun can make even Sydney’s most iconic spots difficult to photograph.

That’s why I usually recommend photographing families during the last hour before sunset.

The light is softer.

Skin tones look more natural.

Children are more comfortable without bright sunlight in their eyes.

As a result, your photographs feel warm, relaxed and timeless.

Beaches or Parks? Which Is Better?

Both can create beautiful photographs.

However, each offers something different.

Beaches

Beaches create open, airy images with soft colours and beautiful sunsets.

They’re perfect for families who love the ocean and don’t mind sandy feet.

Keep in mind that beaches can also be windy, especially during the cooler months. Therefore, flowing dresses, loose hair and lightweight blankets work particularly well.

Parks

Parks offer far more variety.

You’ll often find tall trees, open fields, walking paths and beautiful filtered light all within a few minutes of each other.

In addition, parks usually provide more shelter from the wind, making them a fantastic option for younger children.

Neither option is better.

The right choice simply depends on your family.

Don’t Forget About Practical Things

It’s easy to focus on beautiful scenery.

However, practical details can make a huge difference on the day.

Before choosing a location, ask yourself a few simple questions.

• Is there easy parking?
• How far is the walk from the car?
• Are there toilets nearby?
• Will grandparents be comfortable walking there?

Some of my favourite family sessions haven’t taken place at Sydney’s most famous locations.

Instead, they’ve happened somewhere meaningful.

It could be the beach where your children learnt to walk.

It might be the local park you visit every weekend.

Perhaps it’s the place where your family enjoys Friday afternoon picnics.

Those locations tell your story.

Years from now, they often become even more meaningful because they remind you of this season of life.

When a Studio Session Might Be the Better Choice

Although outdoor sessions are beautiful, they aren’t always the right fit.

If your children are easily distracted, a studio session can often feel far more relaxed.

Without passing dogs, playgrounds, cyclists or changing weather, children naturally stay focused for longer.

As a result, studio sessions usually move a little faster while still creating a wonderful variety of images.

They’re also ideal during winter, rainy weather or Sydney’s hotter months when spending an hour outside isn’t always comfortable.

Ultimately, there isn’t a right or wrong choice.

It’s about choosing the environment where your family will feel happiest.

After photographing families across Sydney for many years, I’ve noticed something interesting.

Parents often spend weeks searching for the perfect location.

Children almost never care.

They remember collecting shells.

They remember chasing bubbles.

They remember cuddling mum and laughing with dad.
