When to Book Newborn Photos

One of the most common questions I get as a Sydney newborn photographer is:
“When is the best time to photograph my baby?”

And honestly?
There’s no wrong answer.

Every phase of your baby’s first year is beautiful in its own way. Each stage captures something completely different — from sleepy newborn cuddles to chaotic crawling adventures.

So instead of asking which stage is best, it’s more about asking:
“What do I want to remember most?”

Here’s what to expect from each phase — and what makes each one so special.

When is the best time to photograph my newborn?

different phases of your newborn

0–3 Weeks

The Sleepy Newborn Stage

This is the classic newborn phase.

Your baby is still sleepy, curly and easy to settle into those cozy wrapped poses everyone loves. It’s the perfect time to capture all the tiny details - flaky toes, squishy cheeks and milk-drunk naps.

I’ll also focus heavily on connection and cuddles with you.

Remarkable thing about this stage? They still feel brand new.

Also remarkable during our session - someone will likely get peed on.

This stage is so underrated.

Your baby is now smiling, reacting and engaging with you constantly. They’ve discovered their voice, their hands and the fact that you’re apparently hilarious.

And importantly…they no longer look like tiny confused potatoes.

As your Sydney family photographer, I love this stage for all the genuine expressions and interaction.

3–5 Months

The Personality Stage

Pure chaos. In the best way.

Your baby is sitting, crawling and constantly on the move, which makes sessions playful, dynamic and full of personality.

Expect gummy smiles, claps, cheeky expressions and peak chunky thigh season.

Remarkable thing about this phase? Their little personality is in full swing.

8–10 Months

The Sitting & Crawling Stage

And suddenly… your newborn is now a tiny toddler.

This stage is full of movement, confidence and BIG emotions. Standing, cruising, wobbling and maybe even taking those first baby steps.

It’s joyful, emotional and slightly cardio-intensive for me.

The Baby Steps Stage

So… When’s the Best Time?

Honestly?
There’s no wrong stage.

The sleepy cuddles.
The first smiles.
The sitting giggles.
The tiny wobbly steps.

As a Sydney newborn photographer and Sydney family photographer, my goal is simply to capture your family exactly as they are in this season — warm, connected and beautifully real.
